Braja Kishore Pradhan, MLA, Talcher
Controversies have popped up with regular frequency but they have not deterred Braja Kishore Pradhan from carrying on his noble service to the people of his constituency. In fact, it was the kindly blessings reciprocated by the residents of Talcher that saw Pradhan sailing through in a different election in 2019 when the BJP made inroads into some of the established BJD bastions.
Pradhan has always been at the forefront of people’s movements and has stood firmly for their cause. Two months back when a strata failure triggered a major landslide at Bharatpur open cast coal mines owned by Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd (MCL), the incumbent Talcher MLA minced no words in pulling up the company’s authorities. Pradhan lambasted the MCL officials for having failed to take up ample precautionary measures and engaged workers in a hazardous working zone. He then raised a vociferous protest in the assembly and out of it, backing the affected workers and their families to the boot.
Pradhan has been wedded to a string of social and humanitarian causes. Recently, he led a team to the Angul stadium, kindling hopes of its revival. According to a source, the stadium will be developed into a modern facility by employing modern technology. It will be brought up to standard to ensure different kinds of sports and games can be played here.
The team, which included Bhubaneswar based architect Gopinath Rana, is said to have conducted a preliminary survey of the stadium. The old bleacher in the stadium has already been declared unsafe. MLA Pradhan informed that the old gallery would be pulled down and steps would be taken to build a new one.
Pradhan’s name has been doing the rounds for the coveted post of the BJD’s Angul district chief after former minister Rajnikanta Singh was nominated as the deputy speaker of the Odisha legislative assembly.
This time, the ruling BJD will face an uphill task to win these ULBs as BJP has managed to make significant gains in the three municipalities. In Angul, BJP dislodged Congress to grab the second place in the 2019 elections. Congress had bagged the chairman post in Angul municipality last time.
In Talcher, though BJD had dominated the municipal council in the last polls, it will not be a cakewalk for the ruling party this time with BJP strengthening its base.
